Tenth Circuit District Courts

The Tenth Circuit District Courts are federal courts which are subject to the tenth circuit court of appeals. The United States court of appeals for the tenth circuit is a federal court with appellate jurisdiction over the districts of Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Until 1929 these districts of the 10th circuit district court were part of the eighth circuit. United States court of appeals for the tenth circuit is one of the thirteen federal courts of appeal.

The United States District Court for the District of Colorado is the federal district court whose jurisdiction is the state of Colorado.  District Courts have general jurisdiction over all civil and criminal cases, and typically handle cases that are beyond the jurisdiction of other courts. Criminal cases heard by District Courts include felonies and lesser-included offenses. Civil cases heard by District Courts include general civil claims without financial limits.

The United States District Court for the District of Kansas is the federal district court whose jurisdiction is the state of Kansas. Kansas District Courts may have specialized court divisions based on case type, including Civil, Criminal, Domestic Relations, Probate, Juvenile, and Limited Actions. Limited Actions may include Small Claims and Traffic cases.

The United States District Court for the District of New Mexico is the federal district court whose jurisdiction is the state of New Mexico.  Criminal cases heard by New Mexico District Courts include felonies and lesser-included offenses, some misdemeanors and preliminary hearings for all types of criminal cases. Civil cases heard by District Courts include general civil claims with disputes for more than $10,000, exclusive of interest and costs.

There are three federal courts In Oklahoma, the United States District Court for the eastern District of Oklahoma having jurisdiction over the a number of counties like Pittsburg, Murray, Bryan etc, United States District Court for the northern District of Oklahoma having jurisdiction over certain portions of the state of Oklahoma and the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma. Each District Court has a Small Claims division that handles most general civil claims for less than $6000, exclusive of attorney fees and costs. District Courts may have specialized divisions for certain types of cases, including Business Court and Drug Courts.

Criminal cases typically heard by District Courts include felonies and some misdemeanors. Jurisdiction over certain types of misdemeanors may vary by District Court depending on whether a Justice Court shares territorial jurisdiction.
