The United States District Court for the District of Tennessee was formed in the year 1797 by an act of the Congress. Tennessee was subsequently divided into three districts: the Eastern, Western, and the Middle districts. As per the norms of the federal court system, which required that every federal judicial district of the United States should possess its own separate district court, the Tennessee districts too came to possess independent three district courts.
The TN District Courts are the general trial courts ruled by the dictates of the federal court system. They are courts of law, admiralty, and equality and are empowered to try both civil and criminal cases. A United States bankruptcy court is associated with each of these three courts.
The Tennessee District Court possesses original judicial rights to try several types of civil and criminal actions: civil acts that are under the purview of the Constitution, the law of the land, or United States treaties; civil deeds wherein the United States is one of the contesting parties; some civil actions that have taken place between the citizens of different states; civil actions that are governed by the admiralty or maritime jurisdiction of the United States; and criminal trials initiated by the United States government.
TN District Courts share concurrent powers with state courts. They also have appellate jurisdiction over certain kinds of orders, judgments, and decrees.
An appeal for a case that has originated in the Tennessee District Court for the Eastern, Western, or Middle districts is heard by the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. This law however, does not pertain to claims for patents and charges against the United States government that are under the purview of the Tucker Act. These exceptional cases are heard in the Federal Circuit.
The Tennessee District Court is located in Knoxville. The court also operates from its other branches at Chattanooga, the headquarters of the Southern division of the district; Greenville, the base of the Northeastern division of the Eastern District; and Winchester, which is the headquarters of the Winchester division. The Northern division of the Eastern District is based in Knoxville.
The district court for the Middle District of Tennessee is headquartered in Nashville. The United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee governs the entire region of West Tennessee, including Perry County, which is located in the Middle District, and the cities of Memphis and Jackson.
