The United States District Court for the District of Michigan was created in the year 1836. It originally enjoyed similar status as the United States circuit courts, except in cases of writs of error and appeal, which were handled by the Supreme Court. The Michigan District Court is located in Detroit. Federal sessions are also held at Bay City, Flint, Ann Arbor, and Port Huron. The district court of Michigan for the Western District is based in Grand Rapids. Some of the court sessions also take place in the courthouses of Kalamazoo, Marquette, and Lansing.
