The United States District Court for the District of Idaho is one of the courts that direct its appeals to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Idaho was announced as a judicial district on July 3, 1980 and only one judgeship was assigned to it. A second judgeship was sanctioned on February 10, 1954. The Idaho District Court comprises of the district of Idaho. The part of the state that lies inside Yellowstone National Park is not included in its jurisdiction. The offices are located in Boise, d'Alene, Moscow and Pocatello. Thomas E. Moss now presides over the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Idaho. The original and general jurisdiction of the Idaho District Court allows it to hold hearings for all civil and criminal cases. Each District Court has a Magistrate Court.
The magistrate court handles some specific cases and those that are beyond its jurisdiction are handled by the district courts. The magistrate courts have limited power. A first round hearing of all criminal cases and hearing of misdemeanors are done in the Magistrate Court. Civil cases of civil claims under $10,000, domestic relation cases like divorce, child custody and visitation, child support, paternity and domestic violence protection order comes under the magistrate court. Juvenile cases like adoptions, juvenile delinquency, child abuse and neglect, termination of parental neglect and children in need of supervision are mostly held in magistrate courts. Cases of involuntary commitments (mental cases) are also mostly handled in the magistrate courts. Among probate cases, those related to name change; wills and estates, trusts, guardianships and conservatorships are held more frequently in magistrate courts. The criminal cases that predominantly fall under the magistrate court's territories are misdemeanors, ordinance violations and traffic and infractions.
The district courts handle cases that are beyond the scope of the magistrate court. The district court hears general civil (unlimited) cases and complex commercial cases. Felony criminal cases are not held in magistrate courts. Their hearings take place only in district courts.
Apart from these, Idaho District Court has a separate Tribal Court Division. Its jurisdiction is concurrent with that of the district courts. Also, for some special cases there are specific divisions like Adult Drug Courts, Adult Mental Health Courts, Juvenile Courts, DUI Courts, Family Dependency Treatment Courts and Youth Courts.
